Ares appoints Kim as head of European special opportunities

Kim spent over 11 years at Apollo where he most recently served as a partner and European co-head of hybrid value.

Ares Management Corporation has announced on Tuesday that James Kim has joined its private equity group as a partner and head of European special opportunities. Kim will be based in London and will lead Ares’ special opportunities activities in Europe. The appointment bolsters Ares’ growing private equity presence in Europe, the firm said.

Kim was formerly a partner and the European co-head of hybrid value at Apollo where he spent 11 years. Kim also served on Apollo’s European operating, strategic and risk committees. Prior to working for Apollo Kim was a senior associate at Citi’s European leveraged finance team where he focused on structuring and syndicating European leveraged loans and high yield bonds. Kim has also previously worked for Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan in its private equity team.

Ares Management Corporation has assets under management of $334 billion. It has over 30 offices globally and employs approximately 2300 people. It was founded in 1997 and is headquartered in Los Angeles. Ares Private Equity Group has approximately $33.4 billion of assets under management as of 30 June 2022 with a team of 90 investment professionals.
