Bregal Unternehmerkapital portfolio company Italgel has made its first add-on, acquiring 100 percent of Spanish collagen manufacturer Protein.

Italgel, an Italian gelatine and collagen producer based in Santa Vittoria d’Alba, expects the deal to boost its presence in the food, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical sectors.

“The acquisition of Protein will allow Italgel Group to further enhance its presence in the fast-growing gelatine and collagen space, while strengthening its production footprint and diversification plan,” said Valentina Pippolo, partner and country head of BU Italy, in a statement.

Protein was founded in 1976 and is based in Girona. It has a “unique” production technology that “enables a fast and wholly natural collagen manufacturing process as well with a high degree of production flexibility”, according to a statement.

BU is a family-backed investment firm with offices in Zug, Munich, and Milan.
